Seminar on Internet Security in conjunction with World Telecommunication and Infomation Society Day - 19 May 2009

This seminar was jointly organized by the Centre of Innovation for Electronics (COIE) and the Association of the Telecommunication Industry of Singapore (ATiS) on 19 May 2009 focusing on Internet Security covering the trends and technologies in this field, with particular focus on technologies and applications that can help protect Internet users, especially minors, from spamming, phishing and other means of gathering personal information in cyberspace. This is an area of increasing security concern especially with the proliferation of numerous on-line communities and social networks.

Three speakers presented their papers as follows:

Paper 1 - “What’s Next for Telecom Carriers?” by Mr. To Chee Eng, Research Vice President for Communications, Gartner
This presentation gave an overview of the telecom services industry, how it has evolved so far, the big challenge faced by operators, and how they are re-defining themselves for future growth. The discussion examined both the Enterprise and Consumer services segments, identifying the opportunities as well as the challenges operators need to surmount to be successful.

Mr To Chee Eng is Research Vice President for Communications in Gartner. He is based in Singapore and is responsible for telecom services research in Asia, focusing on corporate data services, broadband, and IP/Internet infrastructure. He has been with Gartner for 9 years. Prior to Gartner, he was the Asia-Pacific Editor of Data Communications (McGraw-Hill), a respected journal for network architects

Paper 2 - “Countering Cyberspace Threats: Technologies and Challenges” by Mr. Foo Yong Wee, Manager, Communications & Networks Group, School of Engineering (Electronics), Nanyang Polytechnic
This presentation gave an overview of the various cyber threats and attacks that are possible today, and the security technologies and management approaches available today to mitigate intrusions, disruptions and security breaches that threaten businesses, government agencies, and home users.

Mr. Foo Yong Wee is presently a manager in Nanyang Polytechnic, School of Engineering (Electronics). He is currently involved in developing communications and networks applications in the areas of Green ICT solutions, IT service automation, and Infocomm infrastructure security and management. Before joining NYP, Yong Wee came from the networking and telecommunications industry focusing on IP covergence, NGN and Wireless Networks. Yong Wee has a B.Eng (Elect.) and a M.Sc in Comms & Networking from the Nanyang Technological University. He is also a certified Project Management Professional, a certified ITIL Master and a Cisco Certified Internet Expert in Routing & Switching.

Paper 3 – “The Midlife Crisis of Telecoms” by Dr. John Ure, Director of TRP Corporate Pte Ltd & Director of the Telecoms InfoTechnology Forum Ltd (TIF)
This presentation discussed the evolution of Telecoms, from the Vision of the 1990s to the re-Vision of the 2000s. The speaker looked at broadband deployments in Asia Pacific, with the rise of high speed fixed line and wireless convergence, and how the Internet has redefined the role of Telecoms , giving rise to new services being offered.

Mr John Ure is director of TRPC Pte Ltd (Singapore), the consulting, services and training arm of the Telecommunications Research Project (TRP) at the Centre of Asian Studies, the University of Hong Kong where he is associate professor and honorary research fellow. John is an economist specializing in policy and regulatory issues concerning telecommunications and related IT and new media sectors. He is principle author and editor of Telecommunications Development in Asia (HKU Press 2008) the sequel to Telecommunications in Asia: Policy, Planning and Development (HKU Press 1995, 1997).


This seminar was held in conjunction with the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day that commemorates the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865.

About 80 participants from the industry attended this seminar.
